The Broken Tower

James Franco makes his Big Screen directorial debut with “The Broken Tower.” Which is a biography about an American poet named Hart Crane who committed suicide at the age of 32. It stars Franco, Michael Shannon (The Man of Steel) and Stacey Miller (who has starred in many of Franco’s short films). This low budget film shot in three different countries, 30 different locations in only 15 days.

Expect for “The Broken Tower” to make a lot of noise for next year’s movie awards.

The Broken Tower comes out June 20, 2011

Paradise Lost

Not much to tell about this upcoming feature film due to the fact that it is still early in its production but from I can tell it is going to an all out war.

Paradise Lost is based off the epic poem by John Milton written back in the 1600’s and like the book it is about the fall of Lucifer and his rebel angels that waged war against god and then were banished to hell. And due the length of the poem no one really knows how much the film will show, or if they are planning a trilogy. But it is known that Adam and Eve will make an appearance.

But besides that small synopsis that was released a few months back not a lot of further information about the story has been released. But the main actors have been.

Staring as

Lucifer is Bradley Cooper (A-team, Limitless)
Jerahmeel will be played by Dominic Purcell (Prison Break, Blade: Trinity)
Michael will be played by Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter)
Samael will be played by Rufus Sewell (Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter)
Gabriel will be played by Casey Afflect (Gone Baby Gone)

Adam will be played by Diego Boneta (90210, Rock of Ages)
And Eve played by Camilla Belle (When a Stranger Calls, 10,000 BC)

Although this movie has an amazing cast what excites me about it is the director, Alex Proyas. Proyas is known for directing The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot and the Knowing.

And it is said that the movie will have intense action. In an interview with Empire magazine Bradley Cooper stated that they will shoot the entire film in motion capture which was used in Avatar and Rise of the Apes. And he also hints that the film will be about Lucifer going from the Angel of Light to Satan and says that they are changing this image and voice when he gets banned. Also he says they will speak in verse and with an English accent.

To me anything based off the Paradise Lost poem would be epic but that fact that they are shooting with Motion Capture, speaking in verse and having it be extremely violent (hopefully rated R violent) that this will make a great film.

Shooting was to begin this month but got postponed till March to refigure the budget but they are still aiming for a summer 2013 release.

Here is some Concept art released at this past summer’s Comic-Con.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is based off a book with the same name that was written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Grahame-Smith first made the New York Times Best Seller list in back in 2009 with the release of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was a reworking of Jane Austen’s classic Novel “Pride and Prejudice.” And after the quick success of PPZ and went on to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Like the title suggests the book follows Lincoln from his childhood to the time of his assassination and is told through a “secret diary” that Lincoln kept. SMALL SPOILER the book starts off with an eleven year old Lincoln who learns from his father that vampires are in fact real and that they are responsible for the death of his mother. Angered by this Young Lincoln vows to kill as many vampires as he can.

But enough about the book and about the film adaptation…

Not even a year after the book was released 20th Century Fox picked up the movie rights to the book but don’t worry about to many things varying from the book to the film because book author Grahame-Smith has been hired on to write the script and with Tim Burton producing the film. Although Burton won’t be directing this film (majorly because of scheduling conflicts with Dark Shadow, also being written by Grahame-Smith) and the directing chair went to Timur Bekmambetov known for directing Wanted and Night/Day Watch.

Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter has a decent cast that should prove to be the best choice, for if it was weighted down with an A list cast I’m sure the specialness of the movie would have been overlooked.

Staring as

Abraham Lincoln is Benjamin Walker (Flags of Our Fathers)
Vampire Henry Sturgess is being played by Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger)
May Todd Lincoln will be played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World)
And playing lead baddy Adam is Fufus Sewell (A Knight’s Tale)

Although no trailer has been released yet some images have been released.

And from these I think that this movie will be a cult classic but like most cult classics it won’t do very well in theatre. And yet I know I’ll be there opening weekend to see it.

The Dark Knight Rises

I am a huge batman fan. And what Christopher Nolan has done with the batman movies is unbelievable. From the ground breaking origin story in Batman Begins, which has inspidered countless of movies, to the box office recording setting movie The Dark Knight; Nolan’s movies are the best. And next July he is bringing the final chapter to his series to the big screen.
Christian Bale returns as the Dark Knight who is pitted against one of his most brutal foes from the DC universe, Bane who is played by Tom Hardy. The official synopsis of the movie is “Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist leader Bane arrives in Gotham City, pushing it and its police force to their limits, forcing its former hero Batman to resurface after taking the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes.”
After reading many interviews I think it’s safe to say that they terrorist group they are referring to is the League of Assassins (who was lead by Ra’s ah Ghul in Batman Begins and was trying to recruit Bruce Wayne into leading the charge against Gotham). Also it is speculated that Talia ah Ghul being in the movie(daughter of Ra’s) and Liam Neeson will be appearing in Flashbacks. I say speculated because as of right now Nolan hasn’t confirmed if this. Also it is CONFIRMED that Catwoman will be in this movie being played by the Academy Award nominated actress Anne Hathaway. And Catwoman (who is a cat burglar) is after Bruce because she feels that he has gotten rich over people being poor (sound familiar to anyone).

Now that I got the basics out of the way I am going to embellish on the story some. Now this is just me thinking out side of the box from what is known from the two already released trailers and the six minute long prologue that is attached to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

First watch the trailers so you know kind of what I am talking about.
Trailer 1

Trailer 2

Some of you might have noticed the scenes of Bruce Wayne in prison; I think those are going to serve as a back story to back when Bruce was imprisoned in Batman Begins. And knowing Bane’s back story from the comics (was sentenced to life in prison when he was an infant to carry out his fathers punishment.) I think that Bane and Bruce had met back before Bruce became the Batman. Also this works out because I also think that Ra’s rescued Bane from prison and trained him to become an assassin. And once Ra’s got “killed” in the first one I think that that sent Bane off the deep end and ever since that he has been planning his revenge.
Or that can be totally wrong. In the second trailer there is a clip starting at 1:31 and its Bane talking to Bruce (who is severely beaten) saying “When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die. “ which can mean that Bane either had it out for Gotham way before Batman Begins days or that Bruce gets captured during what looks like the raid on his house and is then imprisioned by Bane. That could be as a way to keep Batman from interfering with his plans, but then why wouldn’t Bane just kill him?
So I think that the first scenario is the most likely one.
In the Six minute prologue he says “ It doesn't matter who we are? What matters is our plan.” And from clips shown in the trailers it looks like his plan is to complete his masters work and make Gotham burn. And since, in my theory, Bane and Ra’s were partners that probably mean that Bane knows that Bruce is the Batman. So that sets up why Bane wants to crush Gotham so badly.
Also the trailers show Bane breaking prisoners out of Black Gate prison, blowing up the football field and what I think is raiding of Wayne Manor .

And it also looks like our friend Commissioner Gordon is in for a rude awakening this movie. We have seen him go from detective to commissioner and now it sounds like the mayor is going to can him. And then we see him in a hospitable bed, which can only mean one thing and that is Bane (or goon) gets to him and hurts him good.

Some might have noticed Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays a beat cop John Blake. And hardly anything is known about his character. Set photos show him mostly standing around (as if he was an extra) and every now and again he would do something like chase after a motorcycle with his gun drawn. But when I think back to his casting Nolan made a decently big deal the JGL will be in think movie and that makes me think. So what if batman is needed but is nowhere to be found? (most likely because of bane kidnapping him.) And we know that JGL does play a cop who is after batman and we know that Gordon gets extremely hurt in this movie and is talking to what everyone believes to be Bruce about how “We were in this together, and then you were gone. And now there's evil rising. The Batman has to come back. “ then what if it is JGL not Bruce who says “What if he doesn't exist anymore? “ and Gordon isn’t a dumb guy I’m sure that over the years he has put together the fact the Bruce is Batman, so he tells JGL everything he knows about Bruce, JGL then goes to Wayne Manor and discovers the batcave and takes the suit. So I guess what I’m saying is what if JGL becomes batman for some of the movie as a fill in until he tracks down Bruce and rescues him.
I know all of that was just me thinking extremely but I think that it very well could be because we all know that in the comics when Batman was injured and out of action that someone put on the cowl and fights as him (and again when he “dies” during the Final Crisis) so that’s something to just think about for a little bit.
But on a sad note both of the Chris’s (Nolan and Bale) have said that this will be the final Batman movie in this franchise and that neither are wanting/planning to return. I can go on writing about this movie for ages but I’ll stop for now.

Make sure to stay tuned for more news. Until then here are some awesome pictures.

Prometheus

Ridley Scott isn’t a director that is known for doing Sci-Fi films but when he does it sets the standards for years to come. In 1979 he came out with a Horror Sci-Fi flick called “Alien” and three years later he came out with “Blade Runner.” And to this day those two movies have been the (now dated) standard for any sci-fi film. And I am extremely excited to say that he is going to be doing it again.

“Prometheus” is set to be released in June of 2012 and it is about A team of explorers that discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Now from the many interviews I have read they all hint at the fact that this is a not-so-direct prequel to Scott’s Alien. Rotham, a CEO at Fox Studios, says “If you looked at the whole movie, 95 percent of it is entirely unto itself. Ridley said it right: If you're a fan and you look closely, you'll spot strands of DNA." And Scott further backs that up by saying the last ten or so minutes we’ll start to see creatures that we recognize from the previous films. And also he states that the film is based in the same universe as the alien movies and that if you’re a fan boy that you’ll recognize the company the explorers work for.

And this makes sense from a studios stand point too. Last year they did a not-so-direct sequel to the Predator movies and it did extremely well. So why not try to make another Alien flick.

Recently there was a leak low quality trailer that when it was first leaked many thought it was to good to be true, until FOX quickly shut down all the videos of it on YouTube which confirmed that it was in fact a leaked trailer. Unforntially I wasn’t quick enough to watch it but from everything that I have read about it, it seems amazing. And one of the things that every one is saying is that they show clips of the Space Jockey in the trailer.

For those who don’t know what the space jockey is go watch the first film. Or just read here. The space jockey was in the first alien movie, it was the pilot of the ship that was crash landed on the planet that Ripley and crew was sent to go investigate because it was sending out what they thought was an SOS but was really a stay the hell away.

And Scott said back in the day that the Space Jockey race was a humanoid like species that used the Xenomorphs (the bad alien creature from the franchise) as a type of weapon. They would drop the eggs on an enemy planet and let the creatures destroy all living things.

And since the whole movie is about the humans making a discovery that hints to life on earth I speculate that they find the remains of a space jockey on another planet and since its so human like they figure that we might be related somehow and go to try and find the space jockeys origins. And if you watch the original movie you will that the Space Jockey was carrying a bunch of the alien eggs when it crash landed and then they alien used it as a host to breed the Xenomorphs.

I think that this possible story idea (humans find space jockey>humans explore to find origins>humans find origins>humans discover what destroyed space jockey race) is actually a great idea because it doesn’t deal with the “Alien” directly till the final stages and it fits right into the movie synopsis.
Here are some pictures that have been released through Entertainment Weekly

And here is the famed Space Jockey from the original movie

And if it wasn’t enough that Scott is producing/directing the project the movie is written by Damon Linelof who is now known for his writing credits in the hit TV show Lost and for movies Cowboys & Aliens and the currently untitled Sequel to JJ Abrams Star Trek.

And in front of the camera in this space journey will be Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba.

all and all the movie is going to be beyond amazing and i can not wait.

I’m sure that the trailer for this space epic will be officially released in the upcoming month during the holiday season. And it is currently set to be released on June 8th of 2012.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?

That is the question that Universal pictures and Relativity Media will be asking come the turn of the year. Like the rest of the world movie studios follow trends to try and out do their compactors, their current trend that they are both hoping to dominate in is the new adaptation of the classic tale by the Grimm Bros called Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Now although both studios are producing an adaptation of Snow White, they both took separate approaches. And I was actually surprised when the trailers came out on which studio took which approach. Relativity’s is titled Mirror, Mirror and Universal’s is titled Snow White and the Huntsman.

Now with Relativity Media’s track record of gore driven movies such as Let Me In, The Raven, and Shark Night, I was expecting that they would take the more gore driven turn similar to the 90’s adaptation starting Sigourney Weaver but they took the Disney approach. I was shocked I really think they dropped that ball here. This studio could have made a fantastic version aimed at teens more than children.

Here watch the trailer for yourself.

And when Universal released their trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman, I again was shocked but this time it was in a great way. Universal has a wide variety of films from children films to films slanted to adult themed. And I thought that they would point their adaptation towards the younger kids but no they aim for the teen/ older crowd.

Here watch the trailer.

Now the battle begins and I have to admit Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman seems to have every advantage. Not only does it star more time relative actors it stars twilight Saga’s Kristen Stewart and Thor’s Chris Hemsworth. Whereas the only real notable name in Mirror, Mirror is Julia Roberts and sorry for now a day’s movie generation Kristen and Chris out way the Oscar winner Roberts. Disagree if you want but the numbers will prove me right.

I believe that Relativity has extremely dropped the ball on Mirror, Mirror. M,M is directed but Tarsem Singh, who has recently directed the Immortals for Relativity. Now I haven’t seen Immortals (yet) but I think his talent is wasted from going from a war flix to a children’s show.

Now universal has taken a risk and hired Rupert Sanders. Now you might ask why is that a risk, well it is because Rupert has ZERO credits to his name but still just from the trailer it looks like Snow White will destroy against M,M .
Now Relativity was smart and decided not to go directly head-to-head and decided to move their release of M,M to march which helps it seems more successful, when in turn it won’t be. And Universal is taking a gamble (not really though) by slating Snow White for a summer film, which I’m sure they are hoping it will be a summer block buster (earning 60 mil. Plus) but that is risky because next summer is going to be very intense with The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, The Amazing Spiderman, Prometheus (OMFG!) and G.I. Joe 2.

But I believe that they took the right path in slating it for a summer release. I strongly think that M,M has dropped the ball so badly on their choices and I think the Universals Snow White will reap the benefits.
